About Me

I opened Eastern Market Wellness Center in December, 2015, as a co-working space for holistic practitioners to build their individual businesses in a community environment. Our building was purchased by a developer earlier this year, so I now offer licensed massage therapy in a small studio in the Greater Eastern Market neighborhood. Massage Therapy at Eastern Market Wellness

While massage is typically described by type – for example, Swedish or deep tissue – Eastern Market Wellness supports massage therapy to achieve benefits, called outcomes, that are supported by research evidence. There are FOUR basic massage-related outcomes:

Massage Outcome:  Relaxation

A general, all-over feeling of well-being, involving mental and physical relief after effort; the massage is tranquil, soothing, and comforting. The goal of relaxation is the foundation for almost all massage therapy interventions. Relaxation is a normal, general, and physiologically inclusive process, involving functions of the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system supporting recovery from daily life activities.

A relaxation outcome is not pathology-based; therefore, specific massage-related interventions are minimal, and the results occur in response to general rhythmic movement and moderate pressure. Relaxation is a function of wellness.

Massage Outcome:  Stress Management

Stress is a physiologic response that enables people to cope with strain and anxiety. Stress management strategies support a normal stress response and prevent, control, or reverse stress-related pathology. Many people use massage to manage stress-related symptoms, including irritability, fatigue, inability to concentrate, and difficulty with sleeping. As the stress increases, pathology can develop, resulting in symptoms such as anxiety and depression. The physical symptoms of stress include rapid heart rate; muscle tension, including headache and low-back pain; digestive upset; and many other symptoms related to changes in breathing and regulation of the nervous and endocrine systems.

Massage therapy for stress management includes the relaxation massage outcome, and additional focus on normalizing breathing function to calm the nervous and endocrine systems.

Massage Outcome:  Pain Management

Pain is a complex topic. Pain theories are evolving to help us better understand the different types of pain sensations. Two basic types of pain are acute pain and chronic pain.

  • Acute pain is a natural outcome of tissue damage; it alerts us that we have been harmed.
  • Chronic pain is persistent pain without tissue damage. In other words, chronic pain serves no purpose and is a very difficult health care issue.

Building on the massage application for stress management, each pain situation is unique and will be assessed and then addressed. Identifying and then addressing chronic pain situations is complex. Initially, a series of weekly 90-minute massage sessions may be needed.

Massage Outcome:  Functional Mobility

Functional mobility means that people can accomplish the movements that allow them to take care of daily life activities, engage in occupational pursuits, and participate in play and exercise, which contribute to health and well-being. This is the primary focus for athletes.

The massage session based on functional mobility is typically more active and engages the client in various movements during the massage. Various posture and movement assessments are used. For those individuals such as athletes with high performance demand, a 90-minute massage session may be necessary to achieve and sustain these goals.

Your Individual Massage Care Plan

Relaxation and Stress Management outcomes can be achieved in the 60-minute massage session. Pain Management and Functional Mobility outcomes may initially require the 90-minute session.

Once the outcome goals are determined, then a category of care is identified:

Well-being/Palliative Care

This is an important category of care. It is based on relaxation outcomes and well-being. It is the foundation of massage therapy practice, and elements of comfort and nurturance are included in every massage.

Condition Management

This is the most common category of care. Condition management is beneficial when an individual is dealing with a chronic health condition, or a set of life circumstances that creates chronic stress.

Therapeutic Change

This is a beneficial alteration in the client’s physical and/or mental state that results from a therapeutic massage process. Therapeutic change occurs over a series of sessions, and a ‘maintenance level’ is achieved; the category of care then becomes condition management.

From this information, your individual care plan is developed and massage is provided to meet your goals. The massage process is dynamic and will be adapted based on your health status for each massage that you receive. Each massage session will be charted, and then reviewed prior to the next session. Over time, with regular care, this charting will reflect the progress that you have achieved.
